A Piper Stands

On a winter evening
 when sunsets are celebrated,
a piper plays
his notes forecast a new beginning

 In late spring

when men challenge the wind,
a piper plays
his notes a symbol of freedom

On a summer evening I run

one with the earth
a piper plays
his notes an affirmation of life

On a fall afternoon
as leaves turn to rust I listen

a piper plays
his notes a harbinger of change

  1. Lovely poem, Helen - thanks for hopping on the bus, hope you will take a ride again next week (see TFE's site - my blog list for details). I am not much good at links either, although my son has set one up for the bus and I was able to link you and put you on my side bar as a bus passenger, so fear not - you have arrived at your destination in spite of not knowing how to do links!

  2. Yes, pipers get everywhere. Sometimes they are a blessing! I'm glad that was the case for you.

  4. Really nice poem! I like the repetitions, I can almost hear the rhythm of the piper.

  5. I see no need to add the last season of fall...for in effect...I began the journey with you ...winter to spring to summer..and though, I was ready for the 4th season...I felt complete with anticipation not of any sense shortchanged...
    when your last line...

And all that is yet to come.

Was presented. To me that said...you were open to the continuation of the pipers song...should he appear again.

This is how it read to me. An evolution.

  7. Thanks for the poetic reminder: it happened to me! Once only, so far, on the fells outside Ulverston. He appeared in the middle distance, but well audible! We, stood on a hilltop, began to dance a hopeless approximation of a "fling".
