Oh Jimmy!!!

Now There's A Nose!

You were our Ragtime Jimmy
Singin’ Inka Dinka Doo
We looked right past that nose
Saw the real you

Generous ~ oh so funny
With your Cyrano-size nose
You called it your ‘Schnozzola’
Ready to strike a pose

Knew how to butcher English
Italian to the core
Vaudeville was your stomping ground
Left us wanting more

TV kept you busy
A bright and shining star
Your sign-off phrase a great one
"Good night, Ms. Calabash, wherever you are"

  1. Oh, Helen, I loved this! Don't you wish we looked at what was on the inside of everyone? Look at "Ragtime Jimmy's" smile and kind eyes! Loved, loved the second stanza. :)

  2. He was quite a guy wasn't he! This is a really lovely tribute to him and does the original photograph justice too.

  12. Ah the great Jimmy Durante; his 'September Song' is beautiful. This was such a different and enjoyable take on the prompt. Very creative thinking!

  16. Wonderful! Reminds us of the days when a big nose was not a Surgery Opportunity and having outstanding features was an advantage. Thank goodness Yul Brynner didn't have a hair transplant or Lon Chaney Jr have his eyes fixed!

  17. Brilliant! What a tribute! Jimmy Durante was a huge idol of my father's. He was in the huge nose range (not quite Cyrano) but he gave Karl Malden and Jack Klugman a run for their money - and my oldest brother is the spit of Gérard Depardieu! Thankfully, I took after my mother in the snout-size department!

  22. Helen--wonderful take on the prompt and very sweet poem. I told Tess--I've written a very fun novel about this same subject -- not Jim Durante, but people, specifically, a young girl with a big schnoz. It's called Nose Dive and it's available on Amazon. http://www.amazon.com/Nose-Dive-Karin-Gustafson/dp/0981992331

    A very nice poem. K.
