He Ain't Heavy He's My Brother

~ 1977 ~

Siblings

there were times
they caught him alone
no brother or sister
to run interference
shield him
from the laughing
pointing
bullying
but those times were
few and far between
because
kids knew not to mess
with our boy
his siblings simply
would not tolerate it

  2. He's lucky he had you all around. Unfortunately, the bullying often comes from sibs. BTW, I'm loving the photo!

  3. So sad that bullies generally do find a way to make their mark! What predators they are. But great that many times his siblings were able to shield him! I enjoyed the picture too!

And you are still holding your hand over his shoulders. He is lucky; and you are all lucky for having such hearts and souls.

  19. A touching write, Helen. Funny how siblings can rabblerouse one another, but let someone from outside attack one of them and they band together in fierce protection. I had only one sibling, a brother seven years older than I, and it was not until we were both adults we bonded.

  22. The right kind of support always makes things better, even the horror of being bullied. Glad he had his siblings to stand with him.

  24. great poem, brief, yet the sibling love shines through.
there is a love-hate relationship about the 70's, yet it is an exceptional period to grow up. yeah, the picture could be a still from a movie. :)

  25. Beautiful words of protective supportive siblings.
Kids can be so unkind and even worse, adults too.

  31. I didn’t have a brother, only younger sisters, and no one to defend me against bullies. Sadly, the last time I spoke to my youngest sister was back in 2013, when she tried to bully me. She wouldn’t speak to me at my mother’s funeral – too guilty, I hope.

  36. Siblings are there for us, we can always count on them.

  37. It's funny how we want it both ways; that children are all sweet angels, and children can be such demons. I think children are just people, usually like their parents, and they can behave atrociously to one another. Thank goodness for siblings!

  38. Helen, your poem beautifully captures the protective strength and unity among brothers and sisters. The succinct lines convey a powerful message about the unyielding support and defense siblings provide. A heartwarming and relatable piece! 🌟👫

  40. I love that photograph: and the poem speaks volumes of that glimpse of comraderie and love. As an only child, this would have been my dream. I don't think your brother could have asked for better protectors, Helen!
