All About Red

life is like eating a
ripe tomato
good to its juicy end
comes in countless shapes
sizes, color variations
bursting with potential
supported by a virtual cornucopia of
 recipes guaranteeing culinary success

life is like eating a
pomegranate
it takes tenacity to make your way
through those juicy seeds
a willingness to stain
your fingers in the process
trusting in the end
reward outweighs the mess

life is like eating a
red hot chili pepper
it requires daring
plus an element of risk
the payoff .. you win the trophy
for not backing down

  1. You have my heart with this poem, Helen!😍😍 So much to love here especially; "life is like eating a red pomegranate it takes tenacity to make your way." Thank you so much for writing to the prompt!πŸ…πŸŒΆπŸ’

  2. Wow! The power of metaphor! Each verse in turn hits home as absolute truth, and taken as a whole I must agree that life is all these things, but you've presented these truths to me in ways I would never have thought of.

  3. I can imagine the juices overflowing from the tomato, the perseverance of eating a pomegranate, and the care when eating a red hot pepper. All delightful in their own ways just like all those varied things make life enjoyable.

  5. Dearest Helen,
Yes, you are so right about the easy, the juicy and the well known.
Then the messy and more daring but so worth the extra effort.
And, as the spicy of life the hot chili peppers indeed, daring to spice up your days!
Oh, and the flavors of cranberries and raspberries for dessert... The crown on all other reds.
Will have them for supper with waffles and coconut whipping cream from Trader Joe's with some maple syrup...
    Life is SWEET!
    Hugs,
    Mariette

  9. Red is always the most attractive color in fruit for me probably because we had an apple tree in the garden when I was very young... then there were the tomatoes of course.

  10. A wonderful trio of similes, Helen! I like the way you captured the versatility of the tomato. Pomegranates don’t have to be so messy – my husband seems to have mastered a clean way of getting at the seeds, although he still makes a mess – but he does that in the kitchen anyway!

  11. These splashes of red were just what I needed to read about. I love how joyful each stanza is, and how this piece seems ready to embrace life in all it's sticky, sweet, tangy, ooey-gooey, messy, yum.

  14. "Life is ..." likened to so many ordinary items, I might not have thought of red fruit but you told it well. I loved eating ripe tomatoes in Mother's garden patch. Warm and juicy, no salt. Now I still eat them but take out the seeds.
