open hole flutes
musical notes
slipping and sliding
floating like motes.
playing a game of
hide and go seek
not giving a whit
to havoc they wreak!
flute to my mouth
ready to play
I listen in horror
to notes gone astray.
D-sharp has tumbled
into hole one
C-flat has followed
won't be outdone.
hole is too small
notes wiggle and jiggle
I must admit
I'm having a giggle!
ever so hard
they try to break free
squeaking and shrieking
befuddling me.
notes have gone AWOL
hear what I say
music finds notes
wherever they play!

It was a delight to hear you read this today, Helen. Hope all went well with the movers!

This is so much fun, Helen! Brought a smile!
ReplyDeleteHi Helen! A delightful rendition!
ReplyDeleteI love it. Sour notes can be embarrassing and distracting!
ReplyDeleteI ws diggin it, too, Helen. Thanks
ReplyDeletePS: I get all my flutes from these guys: https://highspirits.com/
Sounds like happy dotage to me. I add tones from a hurlyburly colon.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed hearing you read this Helen but I also like to savour the words in print too. I don't play the flute but I have a Low Whistle - a big plastic tin whistle from Ireland that only has 6 holes and demands odd combinations of holes covered as well as allowing you to slide between notes...
ReplyDeleteDelightful!
ReplyDeleteAs a fellow flutist (flautist?), I have lived this poem! Since purchasing an open-holed flute, I've resorted to little plastic hole plugs as I couldn't reteach my fingers to cover holes properly! Thanks for the smiles, Helen :D
ReplyDeleteSuch a jovial feel, full of life. I’m bummed I missed you reading it. I went on the Saturday OLN.❤️
