Dancing With My Grandson Charlie

Open Link Night at the dVerse Poets Pub ~ Sanaa is our host and as she reminds us ~ Anything Goes!!

This is a poem I first published in March, 2021

My hand rests in his

we twirl together

his smile a melody

I have known forever

I follow, as always I have

As always I will

someday my feet will falter

someday I will let go

but not tonight

tonight we dance

to the melody of a wish

I hold deep in my bones

that life is kind to him

that love finds him whole

that his road is long, never lonely

as music swells, his eyes shine

I gather myself into the moment

knowing he will carry this dance

long after I am gone

  3. What an amazing experience to have. I love that you captured it in a poem that both of you can treasure.
    These lines are so tender,
    "tonight we dance

to the melody of a wish

I hold deep in my bones"

  4. A delightful poem, Helen. Having ‘danced’ to ‘Living on a Prayer’ with my seven-year-old grandson, I hope I get to dance with him when he’s all grown up, I especially love the phrase ‘his smile a melody I have known forever’.

  9. What a lovely Grandmother you are, Helen, and no doubt he will one day look back on your poem too, and treasure it as much as the memory of that dance...

  10. This is so sweet and so exactly how I feel about my grandsons that it made me cry, instantly. Our boys are only 2.5 and 4.5 now, but there have already been memorable dances, and I know there will be many more. Kudos for evoking such deep, real feelings with your well-structured and lovely words.
