Feeling Deeply

Rosemary asks us to share something precious today ~ feelings we hold deeply and close to our hearts with the Friday Writings Community

Also sharing with dVerse Poets

Once upon a time
not all that long ago
our special needs Son, Carl
walked into the living room and asked me:

"Mom, if you and Dad had known
how I would be ... would you still have had me?"

Yes, those were his exact words
I was momentarily dumb-struck
trying hard to find some semblance of composure
and I responded ...

"You, my precious Son, are without a doubt the best thing that ever happened to our family .. you have made each of us BETTER human beings! I cannot imagine our lives without YOU. We are more generous, empathetic, inclusive, without bias / judgement .. and you taught us that.

Everyone who knows you, customers who interact with you at Safeway [ the supermarket Carl has worked in for twenty years ] admires and respects you!"

Carl turns sixty-five this year
He is my housemate, my buddy
travel companion, assistant chef
he makes me laugh, we share movies
television shows, sporting events
though he is a huge wrestling fan
[ and I am not ]

deeply held feelings
what is truly important
for all my lifetime

  2. That was an honest, pointed question your son asked that gave you an opportunity to share your feelings. To have the company of an assistant chef who can also make you laugh sounds pretty good to me. It is a cold world at times where all are special and have differing needs.

  8. I am deeply moved. Life gives us the choice - the choice to accept what comes along appreciating all the good of that gift or go down the slippery slope

  11. The internet is full of stories about horrific breakdowns of family bonds. It is truly lovely to read this example of a joyful connection.

how I would be ... would you still have had me?" O Helen, how touching but lovely a question for him to ask his mom. Your answer was from your heart and hurt my heart when I heard how you responded.
