Dead Poets Society

In the dVerse Poets Pub ~~

My inspiration, Poet ~ Siegfried Sassoon ~ “When I'm Among a Blaze of Lights” ~ he certainly had a way with rhyme.

in the city's rush and throng

I seek a place where I belong

amidst the whispers of tall trees

gentle hum of honey bees

meadows lush, deep green and wide

where wildflowers in abundance hide

for in the stillness of the night

I find my peace, my heart's delight

when I'm among a blaze of lights

within the city's sleepless nights

I feel a longing deep and true

for quiet space and skies of blue

  1. Greenery space in the city does help a person's longing for forests and open fields. Our walking trail amongst the green grassed flood control depressions makes for a most pleasant walk. Ours has a little running stream through and ducks, cranes, egrets and the non-winged turtles. Very pleasant.

    1. p.s. "Get well quick", old but it's my wish for you. Mrs. Jim and I had COVID back in March, 2022. For her there aren't many remnants but the Lingering COVID has left me with hardly any smell or taste, mucus like I only had with a cold, and a messed up sense of balance.
Different folk get different types of ails. Not fun, keep us posted. O yes, today we got our 4th shot, two earlier for the COVID and now another
      booster shot.

  2. I love your response, Helen, particularly the dreamy rhyme scheme and use of colour. I agree with you that Sassoon had a way with rhyme, and I’m glad you chose to reflect that in your poem. I love the contrasts in each stanza: ‘blaze of lights / within a city's sleepless nights’ with ‘quiet space and skies of blue’ and, in particular, ‘the city's rush and throng’ with the ‘whispers of tall trees’ and ‘gentle hum of honey bees’.

  3. What would it be like if we didn't have imagination to carry us from one place to somewhere better...

  4. Well done Helen! He'd be my choice too if I can get around to fashioning something worthwhile.
