For Poets and Storytellers
Appreciate the shimmer ~ the artful face
coiling into charm ~ a smile that almost means it
beneath the lacquered calm her pulse keeps time
to older music ~ wild, unruly, half-forbidden
she knows the rules ~ how to break them softly
she walks in light ~ keeps a piece of night
tucked under her tongue ~ a secret flavor
she will not spit out
she's a bright one ~ YES
also one who burns her own edges
curious to see what survives the flame

That's a different take on the prompt (I do like seeing how different minds detour!) and a very telling one. The phrase: "a smile that almost means it" hit home for me.
ReplyDeleteWow, a fabulous portrayal of an intriguing personality.
ReplyDeleteToo complicated for this simple chick:)
ReplyDeleteWell-penned, I particularly liked "keeps a piece of night
ReplyDeletetucked under her tongue"...
I like how dreamy and surreal this piece is. It certainly has the flavor of the night!
ReplyDeleteI knew her, she was in my typing class. Her moto was "I will stay a "single girl" and teach my girls to be the same." She had a child and married soon after to one of the road makers working here. BTW our typing class only had two boys, the rest were girls.
ReplyDeleteExcellent, dreamy piece of writing, Helen.
