Christopher Shay ~ Red Umbrella
midnight in Bangkok
behind a camouflaged door
where deals are done
bargains struck, goods exchanged
head down, shoulders hunched, walk away
with your precious stash of hash
tucked inside that tiny scarlet bag
smoke it, blow it, get on with it, it's your life
but you will need that lovely red umbrella
for all the rainy nights in Bangkok

Ooooh this goes SO well with the painting....and I love that it's a bit mysterious as well! Rainy nights in Bangkok indeed! Should be the setting here for a movie!
ReplyDeleteWhat a brilliant piece Helen atmospheric and gritty, a cinematic piece of writing - a noir vignette 💜
ReplyDeleteNeatly ended! A bit of a cautionary tale indeed - Jae
ReplyDeleteQuite a dark cinematic ekphrastic poem, Helen, with a gorgeous splash of colour!
ReplyDeletea wonderful poem, Helen! The photo pairs with the poem perfectly.
ReplyDeleteHash in a tiny scarlet bag for all those rainy Bangkok nights -- whatever got us through the night was sacred if just for that ...
ReplyDeletethis is so good, hash in a scarlet bag and a red umbrella, uuuh. Absolutely love the image painted by the poem.
ReplyDeleteDid not expect to be transported to a rainy night in Bangkok, nor the walk on the wild side. But sure, I'll take a puff. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteYou brought out beautifully the realities of Bangkok especially the typical shady side of it! And cleverly add a caution of an 'umbrella' as a safeguard! Great poem Helen!
